This series was inspired by looking at Jean Arp's chance collages while on view at the Nasher Sculpture Center. His works in this series were created by tearing paper into pieces, letting them fall to the floor, and then adhering the scrap where it happened to land. He relinquished control of the work and let gravity do the work. The Dada movement has always intrigued me, mostly because while I like the essence of control and structure within my pieces, I also love the absurdity and free-spirited nature found in the works.

In thinking about how COVID had upended our lives and left us with no control, this was the opportune time to give myself the chance to let go. Similar to Arp, these pieces were created by crumpling up swatches of fabric and then dropping them on top of each other. The small mountains of various patterns and colors created an interesting movement and dialogue that I then used as reference. I cut out a piece of wood to replicate the outer edge of the happenstance fabric, and then painted the swatches in their fallen forms.
